The Sciences of Pittsburgh’s Newest Aircraft

New aircrafts mean faster and more comfortable travel, but what are the deeper implications? Pittsburgh International Airport is now one of the first in the nation to house the new Embraer 175. This aircraft will fly American Airlines (and subsidiaries) route from Pittsburgh to Chicago. However, there is more to this aeronautical marvel than added usb ports:

Some mathematics that set the E175 apart from others:

  • An engine has a max thrust of 14,200lbs

  • A maximum operating speed of Mach .82 (890km/h)

  • Standard operating speed of 820km/h

  • An at-capacity range of 3,706km

A sociological study on human behavior has shown that interactions between strangers change with their environment.

For instance, transportation in buses or planes tends to facilitate active but impersonal interactions. While the E175’s extra leg room is nice, a fascinating concern is whether seat proximity has an impact on unacquainted social interaction.

The addition of the newer jet may be a reflection of Pittsburgh’s growth as an technologically innovative and corporate-minded city. The rise of hardware incubators such as TechShop and AlphaLab Gear also exemplify this trend. This growth will likely continue as more national business traffic focuses on Pittsburgh.
